Frequently Asked Questions
-
What do you feed your flock? We feed an organic all flock feed and rotate our flocks for free ranging.
-
Do you heat your poultry runs and coops over the winter. We do not have heated facilities, we are on a lakefront property so we provide wind breaks for the runs so that our birds are not exposed to the cold wind off of the lake, this is especially important for our Marans and Silverudd's who sport large single combs. We find that frost bite happens less often if the boys are not out in the cold winter wind.
-
How do I handle my hatching eggs when they arrive?Shipped eggs need a minimum of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to settle and come to room temperature after shipping before you place them in the incubator. After resting, eggs should be candled to check for loose air cells and cracks before putting them in the incubator.
-
Some of my eggs have loose air cells can you replace them? No. Shipped hatching eggs are a high risk purchase. Loose air cells are caused by rough handling during shipping. We maintain best practice here on the homestead to ensure that hatching eggs are handled with care. We label our boxes with clear "fragile handle with care" labels to aid in courier handling. Once hatching eggs are picked up by the courier we are no longer responsible for the handling or care of the shipped eggs.
-
My egg arrived cracked, do you replace cracked eggs?We can not replace a cracked egg, we do offer a refund for cracked eggs if they have been cracked during shipping. If you have received your order and you have a cracked egg please contact us. We will not provide a refund for any cracked eggs that were cracked or damaged outside of the shipping foam the eggs were shipping in.
-
What is your fertility and hatch rate?We typically see an average of an 86.6% hatch rate across all of our breeds on picked up eggs. For shipped eggs this typically drops to half depending on handling while in transit. We start fertility testing mid February and do not release eggs until we have achieved a 90% fertility rate. We then test for fertility every 10 days during the breeding season to maintain our fertility goals.
-
Where do you ship?We ship within Canada
-
Do you ship day old chicks? No. We only ship fertilized hatching eggs within Canada.
-
Why is there an additional shipping charge on my order? Our custom packaging is designed to hold up to 26 eggs. We always send an extra egg per order. If you have placed a large order for 25 eggs plus we will need to send an additional box resulting in an additional shipping charge from the courier, we then charge you for the additional parcel being shipped.
-
What do you ship your hatching eggs in?We take great care in preparing your eggs for transport. We have custom foam shippers which hold the eggs snuggly in place we add 1/2 inch foam around the shipping box and we use double walled boxes.
