Silverudd's Blue

Productive ~ Memorable Roosters ~ Active

We quickly became obsessed with the Silverudd's blue when we learned about their history. I found it personally touching that Martin Silverudd was working to create a breed of chicken that would be of irreplaceable value on a homestead.

That of course was most likely not at the forefront of his mind, however, he did just that with the Silverudd's Blue named in honor of him.

We love our Silverudd's for many reasons but the most important to us is how productive they are. Hens are on average 3 to 3.3 pounds (Small) and they produce a large 60 gram plus size egg and not just any egg a beautiful shade of green, from light sea foam to an olive shade. Due to their size they consume less feed than other breeds and in the warmer months when free ranging is an option they rarely touch their feed, if ever.

They are predator savvy and when not foraging you will find them up in your trees hanging out during the hot afternoon sun enjoying the breeze.

The roosters are very flashy with large single combs, beautiful hackle and saddle feathers that contrast against either the blue or black plumage along their body. My personal favourite colour pattern are the Black Silver roosters.

As far as personality goes they are for the most part calm and easy going, we do have some from hatches every now and then that are flighty, we do not add these bird into our breeding program. We select calm birds that are easy to handle.

There is not a Standard of Perfection (SOP) for the Silverudd's Blue, however, there are a set of guidelines that we along with other breeders do follow to maintain a standard among the breed as well as its heritage and improve upon what Martin SIlverudd's goal for the breed could have been.  If you would like to see those guidelines you can follow this link

As I mentioned above hens are prolific layers of large green eggs 250 - 275 per year. They are also very good winter layers.

We have sourced our Silverudd's Blue flocks from 3 separate breeders.

When you get Silverudd's from us you will hatch a good mix of blue, black, and splash chicks.

Though willow legs are acceptable for the splash variety we only breed back to our splash birds if they have slate legs and feet.

We are in the process of having our breeding flock genetically tested for the Homozygous (Blue egg laying) gene. This ensures that hens within future generations only lay blue/green eggs and do not lay brown eggs.
